Capturing Light in a Watercolor Street Scene

No matter what I choose to paint—whether it’s an urban street, a natural landscape, or an indoor setting—my focus is always on light. Light is what gives a scene its atmosphere and helps create a sense of depth and realism.
Capturing light convincingly, however, is not always easy. Street scenes in particular can be challenging because of their complexity and variety of surfaces. Below are some practical approaches that can help you represent light effectively in watercolor street paintings.
How to Show Light in a Watercolor Street Scene
In this demonstration, I paint a scene from the charming town of Montreuil-Bellay in France, a place filled with inspiring views at every turn.
Helpful Techniques for Painting Street Scenes
1. Decide on the brightest area from the beginning
To successfully depict light, you must plan ahead. Before starting, determine which part of your painting will hold the strongest light.
During the first wash, I already establish the brightest zone, which is the light-facing side of a pale building in the center. At this stage, the white of the paper is still available, making it possible to preserve those highlights.
Once watercolor dries, it becomes very difficult to recover bright areas. That’s why the placement of light must be decided early on.
2. Pay attention to reflective surfaces
Urban scenes often include objects like cars or windows that reflect their surroundings. These surfaces are perfect opportunities to show subtle variations of light.
For example, in the car within my scene, I used cooler tones on the windshield and upper areas to suggest reflections of the sky. On the lower sections, I applied warmer tones to reflect the street below.
A useful guideline is to use cooler colors for surfaces facing upward and warmer tones for areas closer to the ground. This contrast helps enhance the overall lighting effect.
3. Build strong washes for better contrast
Light appears more vivid when there is a wide range of values in the painting. This means your washes need to be bold enough to maintain their strength after drying.
A common issue among beginners is applying washes that are too light. Once dry, they lose intensity and reduce the contrast needed to support bright highlights.
In my own painting, I noticed the side of a building lacked depth after the second wash. To fix this, I added another layer to strengthen the mid-tone value. Even a subtle adjustment can improve contrast and make the lighter areas stand out more effectively.
4. Wait until the end before judging the light
When painting watercolor scenes, I follow a three-stage process. Breaking the work into steps helps me stay focused and prevents rushing into details too early.
After the first wash, the painting looks very loose and abstract. Even after the second layer, forms may still appear soft and undefined. It can be tempting to jump ahead and add darker details, but doing so too soon can ruin the balance of light.
The first wash is your only chance to preserve the brightest highlights. Once darker tones are introduced, that opportunity is gone. Trust the process and allow the painting to develop gradually.
Also, avoid evaluating your work too early. A full range of values is only achieved near the end. Even then, it can help to step away and review the painting later with fresh perspective.
5. Use gouache carefully for final highlights
If you need to bring back small highlights at the end, gouache can be useful. It allows you to reintroduce tiny accents of light that were difficult to preserve earlier.
In this painting, I applied gouache sparingly to a lamp, parts of the car, and a figure to emphasize the brightest points. These small touches help clarify where the strongest light falls.
However, it’s important not to overuse gouache. It should only be applied to select details at the final stage.
The Importance of Light in Watercolor Painting
Light plays a fundamental role in how we experience any environment. It influences mood, depth, and the relationships between objects.
In watercolor painting, believable light helps define the time of day, suggest seasonal conditions, and create emotional impact. It brings dimension to a scene and makes it more engaging for viewers.
Mastering light can transform a painting from average to compelling. With practice and careful observation, you can use these techniques to create more convincing and expressive watercolor street scenes.

Essential Tips for Growing and Caring for Oleander
Oleander is a highly valued shrub for gardeners living in warmer climates, primarily due to its resilience and ability to produce beautiful flowers for most of the year. Originating from the Mediterranean region, this evergreen plant is frequently used in public landscaping and roadside plantings because it handles heat, drought, and pollution with ease. It features slender, olive-like leaves and clusters of star-shaped flowers that appear in various shades of white, pink, red, and yellow. While it is an excellent addition to a garden, it is important to remember that all parts of this shrub are highly toxic to humans and pets, so it requires careful handling and thoughtful placement.
