Some evidence also shows female giraffes have proportionally longer necks than males relative to their forelegs, suggesting both feeding efficiency and sexual selection contributed to neck development.
Other Physiological Adaptations
Giraffes’ great height requires specialized adaptations. Their cardiovascular system can pump blood over two meters from the heart to the brain. Adult giraffes maintain systolic blood pressure between 200 and 300 mmHg, supported by a large heart with thick left ventricular walls—up to 3 inches thick—to overcome hydrostatic pressure.
Their neck veins feature one-way valves to prevent blood from pooling when lowering their heads to drink, ensuring consistent brain circulation. Thick, tightly wrapped skin on the lower legs acts like natural compression to support circulation, while cloven hooves with soft pads distribute weight and absorb shock.
Ossicones—horn-like structures on the head—are made of ossified cartilage covered with skin and fur. Both sexes have them, though males’ are thicker and used in necking contests for dominance. Some research also suggests ossicones may assist in heat regulation.
Modern Diversity and Ongoing Evolution
Historically, giraffes were considered a single species with several subspecies. Genetic studies now show four distinct species: northern giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), southern giraffe (Giraffa giraffa), reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulata), and Masai giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchi). These species do not naturally interbreed, and their genetic differences are comparable to those between polar and brown bears.
Giraffes continue to evolve today. Genetic changes shape their skeletal and cardiovascular systems, height gives them a broader view to detect predators, and their long necks allow them to forage safely over large areas.
