BMW and Audi each have their own take on what a high-performance wagon should be. The new 2025 M5 Touring enters the U.S. market as the latest German beast, facing off against the well-established RS6 Avant Performance. BMW M5 Touring (2025, G99 generation)

This is BMW’s newest performance wagon, combining a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with a 194-hp electric motor in a plug-in hybrid setup. Together they produce 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. The car uses an eight-speed ZF automatic, all-wheel drive, but with the ability to switch to rear-wheel-drive mode when desired. It comes packed with features: rear-wheel steering, carbon ceramic brakes, and a high level of adjustment in its drive modes. Curb weight is substantial: about 5,456 lbs. Price as tested: ~$140,775.

Audi RS6

Avant Performance The RS6 Avant Performance brings Audi’s tuned 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, delivering 621 hp and 627 lb-ft. It does not have hybrid assistance. It also has all-wheel drive (Quattro), an eight-speed automatic, rear-wheel steering, and adjustable air suspension. It’s lighter than the BMW by a few hundred pounds (≈ 4,902 lbs), but still a heavyweight. Tested price: ~$167,140.

Performance & Handling

Acceleration: The BMW pulls ahead from 0-60 mph with a time of about 3.2 seconds, slightly faster than the RS6’s 3.4 seconds. In the quarter-mile, the M5 also beats the Audi: 11.2 seconds @ 126.1 mph vs 11.8 seconds @ 118.6 mph.

Braking & Stops: From 60 mph, the RS6 stops in around 101 feet, while the BMW needs about 105 feet. From 100 mph, Audi is superior: ~274 ft vs the BMW’s 290 ft. However, in the combined 0-100-0 mph test, the BMW takes 11.3 seconds, beating the RS6’s 12.2 seconds.

Cornering & Handling: On lateral grip and dynamic tests, the RS6 has a slight edge in max-lateral grip (0.98 g vs 0.95 g). In a figure-eight test, Audi posted a 23.6 second lap, narrowly faster than BMW’s 23.8. But in more demanding road sections — twisty, mountain roads — BMW feels more composed, more eager to change direction. The RS6, while competent, shows more body movement and less precision under deeper cornering loads.

Driving Experience & Comfort

The RS6 gives a sportier cockpit feeling: tighter bolstering in the seats, Alcantara wrapped steering wheel, more aggressive cues. But ride quality suffers — it tends to be choppier over rough surfaces. Its transmission shifts are strong but less crisp compared to the BMW. Additionally, over longer drives, the RS6's seats are less forgiving.

The M5 Touring leans more toward luxe comfort combined with performance. Its cabin is more refined, with deeper V8 sound (although helped by audio enhancements) and smoother ride overall. The steering, while very precise, feels slightly “boosted” — not vague, but engineered to feel more responsive than purely natural. It shines especially in demanding road conditions.

Verdict

After extensive testing, MotorTrend concludes that the BMW M5 Touring is the more well-rounded driver’s wagon. It offers superior “real world” dynamics, better performance numerically, and more comfort without sacrificing power. While the Audi RS6 Avant Performance remains a strong contender — gorgeous design, excellent braking, lots of tech — it just doesn’t match BMW under demanding driving.

If you want performance and utility and luxury, the BMW edges it — especially if you can handle its weight and appreciate its tuning. The RS6 is still fantastic, but it’s perhaps slightly more committed to its sporty image than being the outright all-rounder.
