Bottles in the landscape

While passing by a neighborhood strip of land between the sidewalk and street, I noticed something that immediately caught my attention. I had to pull over and take a quick picture because the idea was so colorful and unexpected.

Using discarded bottles as a garden feature is certainly an affordable and eye-catching type of hardscape. Of course, the real cost depends on what was originally inside those bottles—whether they once held wine, water, spirits, or something else entirely.

My First Experience Seeing Bottles as Garden Decor

This sight reminded me of Bella Madrona and the first time I encountered bottles being incorporated into a landscape design. It was one of those creative garden ideas that stayed in my memory because it showed how everyday objects could become unique decorative elements.

That moment also made me think about all the other interesting ways I have seen bottles reused in outdoor spaces.

Bottles as Garden Features

Over the years, I have come across many imaginative examples of bottles being transformed into garden decorations. Near Garden Fever, for example, bottles were placed along the top of a retaining wall, creating a colorful and artistic border.

I have also seen bottles turned into miniature terrariums, giving plants a tiny enclosed environment while adding a decorative touch to the garden.

Bottle Collections in Creative Gardens

Karen Schwartz’s garden contained an impressive collection of bottles used in different ways. The variety of colors, shapes, and arrangements showed how simple recycled materials could bring personality and charm to a landscape.

I also remember the bottles displayed in Raul Zumba’s Bay Area garden during my visit last December. They were another great example of how bottles can be transformed from ordinary household waste into creative garden art.

Finding Inspiration for My Own Bottle Project

After thinking about all these creative bottle displays, I started wondering whether I should find a way to use the large collection of wine bottles we accumulate at home.

I have already given some of our bottles to Alison, who enjoys creating unique garden projects and has used them in imaginative ways. Her work inspired me to consider doing something similar with my own collection.

A Simple Recycling Habit

For now, however, my usual routine remains the same. Every week, I simply place our empty bottles at the curb for recycling.

But after seeing so many clever garden ideas, I may have to rethink that habit and find a creative way to give those bottles a second life in the garden.
